LEGAL ISSUES

The Supreme Court ruled in California versus Greenwood (1988) that people do not have a broad right to privacy with respect to items they throw in the trash. Business documents thrown in the trash are open invitations for the illegal use of your personal or business information. The table below provides information relating to the type of information and the laws that may be applied if that type of information is released - intentionally or unintentionally.
